Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week: Empowering Young People at Timeout

This week marks National Apprenticeship Week, and its theme, "Skills for Life," perfectly reflects the initiative we’ve launched at Timeout to support our young people aged 16 and over. Our mission is to provide them with opportunities to gain valuable insights into the working world, build confidence, and develop the skills they need to thrive independently.

One shining example of this is Liz, one of our young people who has truly flourished through this initiative. After a formal phone interview with our Care Director, Chen, Liz impressed us with her confidence and professionalism. She was offered the role of cleaner, working alongside our Head Cleaner, Gemma, at Timeout.

Gemma had nothing but praise for Liz, saying: "She is very pleasant and polite and has a great work ethic, which will support her to go far in her career moving forward. She's built up her confidence with this role and working with me and isn't afraid to get stuck in and work hard. She's a pleasure to work with!"

For Liz, this opportunity has been transformative. She shared how this role has given her a sense of independence, freedom, and the means to build her future.

At Timeout, we are deeply committed to giving our young people the best opportunities in life. The statistics surrounding care leavers in the UK workforce highlight the urgency of this mission. Care leavers are over ten times more likely than their peers to be Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) by the age of 21. Nearly one-third of care leavers fall into this category, compared to just 2.4% of the general population.

We refuse to accept this reality. Instead, we are determined to be the change. By equipping our young people with resilience, confidence, and practical skills, we aim to break this cycle and empower them to succeed.

Liz’s story is just one example of how we’re making a difference. We’re proud to celebrate her achievements and look forward to seeing her continue to grow. Together, we’re not just preparing young people for the future—we’re helping them build it.
