Alex, a young person in our care, often talks about his admiration for the extraordinary Olympic javelin champion, Fatima Whitbread. But it’s not just her athletic achievements that inspire him; it’s her heartfelt memoir, My Bright Shining Star. Abandoned as a baby and spending her first 11 years in a children’s home, Fatima’s courage and resilience have deeply resonated with Alex. He often says the book has been a guiding light for him, even sharing, “I have found my shining star in Katie,” his dedicated carer.
When the opportunity arose for Alex to connect with his hero, Rebecca and Chen from the Timeout team worked together to make it happen.
Fatima Whitbread did more than just join the Zoom call; she shared her life story, passion, and warmth. For over an hour, Fatima spoke candidly about her own challenges—her childhood, her time in care, and how she overcame adversity to become a world-class athlete.
