When Dreams Come True: Alex Meets,  Shining Star, Fatima Whitbread!

At Timeout Homes, our mission is simple yet profound—to provide care, support, and opportunities for every child in our care to thrive. Recently, we had the privilege of witnessing a truly heartwarming moment.

Alex, a young person in our care, often talks about his admiration for the extraordinary Olympic javelin champion, Fatima Whitbread. But it’s not just her athletic achievements that inspire him; it’s her heartfelt memoir, My Bright Shining Star. Abandoned as a baby and spending her first 11 years in a children’s home, Fatima’s courage and resilience have deeply resonated with Alex. He often says the book has been a guiding light for him, even sharing, “I have found my shining star in Katie,” his dedicated carer.

When the opportunity arose for Alex to connect with his hero, Rebecca and Chen from the Timeout team worked together to make it happen.

Fatima Whitbread did more than just join the Zoom call; she shared her life story, passion, and warmth. For over an hour, Fatima spoke candidly about her own challenges—her childhood, her time in care, and how she overcame adversity to become a world-class athlete. Her words were not only inspiring but profoundly relatable to Alex, who listened intently alongside Katie, his carer.

What stood out most was how effortlessly Alex and Fatima connected. Their conversation flowed naturally, like two old friends catching up. Alex was amazed not only by Fatima’s incredible ability to throw a javelin the length of a football field but also by her lovable dog, Freddie, who made a special Zoom cameo!

Katie also told me they dressed up for the occasion wearing matching star t-shirts and accessories!

This wasn’t just a one-time meeting. Alex and Fatima plan to stay in touch, continuing what promises to be a meaningful connection for both of them. For Alex, this meeting wasn’t just motivational—it was transformational. It wasn’t just about admiring a public figure. It was about finding a mentor, a friend, and a reminder that his dreams and his voice matter.

Fatima, in turn, showed incredible kindness and compassion. Her ability to connect with Alex and Katie on such a personal level is a testament to her commitment to helping vulnerable children and young people feel seen and heard.

At Timeout Homes, moments like this are at the heart of what we strive for every day. They encapsulate not just our mission but the passion of our team and carers, who go above and beyond for the children in our care.

It’s about more than just providing a safe space; it’s about giving children like Alex the tools, experiences, and relationships to dream boldly and live fully.

A massive thank you goes out to Fatima Whitbread for her generosity and warmth, and to everyone involved in making this special connection possible.

If Fatima taught us anything through her story and actions, it’s that every child has the potential to be a bright shining star. Sometimes, all it takes is one meaningful connection to help that light shine brighter.
