A Chilly Adventure with Big Benefits: Our Cold Water Therapy Experience

Cold Water Therapy Meets Team Building

When's the best time to jump into freezing cold water? A week before Christmas, of course! At Timeout, we took the plunge—literally—by incorporating cold water therapy into our wellness programme. The idea wasn’t just about chilling out (no pun intended); it was about challenging ourselves, fostering teamwork, and reaping the incredible benefits that cold water therapy offers for both mind and body.

Our fearless leaders, Georgina and Wayne—avid cold water swimmers themselves—organised and guided the session. From mental preparation to understanding the benefits, they ensured our team was ready for this unique wellness experience.

Preparing for the Chill

We kicked things off at our head office where we talked about what to expect and how to approach the challenge ahead. The sense of excitement (and perhaps a little hesitation) was palpable as we all geared up. After the briefing, we headed to our local reservoir—our chosen spot for this icy adventure.

It was a crisp, sunlit day, but make no mistake—it was cold. The water temperature? A brisk 7 degrees. But we were up for the challenge, armed with the support of our colleagues and eager to see what this experience would bring.

Taking the Plunge

Mind over matter became our mantra as we stepped into the icy water together. Despite the immediate chill that took our breath away, we pushed through, knowing the sense of achievement waiting on the other side. I can't express how proud I am of each and every team member. For over seven minutes, we braved the cold water—swimming, dipping, and conquering our doubts.

For some, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, never to be repeated, for others, it was the beginning of a new wellness routine. Regardless of individual outcomes, the entire group left the water with a sense of accomplishment. Many described the elation, clarity, and energy they felt afterwards—a testament to the mental and physical benefits cold water therapy offers.

The Benefits of Cold Water Therapy

Why cold water therapy, you may ask? The practice has been gaining attention, and for good reason. Here are just a few of the benefits our team experienced:

  • Boosted Mood: Despite the initial shock, the surge of endorphins had everyone feeling invigorated.

  • Improved Circulation: The cold water stimulated blood flow, leaving us feeling energised.

  • A Sense of Achievement: Overcoming the challenge gave each participant a new sense of confidence and resilience.

But it wasn’t just about the personal benefits. Doing this as a team created a shared memory, strengthened our camaraderie, and reminded us just how much we can achieve together.

Back to Base—and Bacon Sandwiches

After our time in the water, we returned to the office to warm up with well-deserved hot chocolates and bacon sandwiches. It was the perfect way to reflect on the experience, share stories, and celebrate our collective accomplishment.

Special thanks to Georgina and Wayne for spearheading this fantastic wellness session—one that left us buzzing with positivity and looking forward to more team challenges.

Cold water therapy isn’t for the faint-hearted—but it’s certainly worth trying, even if just once. Whether you decide to include it in your routine or make it an annual team tradition, the mental and physical benefits are undeniable.

At Timeout, this session was more than just a dip in freezing water; it was a chance to bond as a team, step out of our comfort zones, and kick off the festive season feeling accomplished.

If you’re a wellness enthusiast, a cold water swimmer, or simply someone looking for unique team-building ideas, why not give it a go? Who knows—you might just love it (or at least enjoy some warm hot chocolate afterwards!).

Georgina’s already planning the next wellness adventure for us—what will it be? Watch this space!
