National Apprenticeship Week 2026: Skills for Life at Timeout Homes

As National Apprenticeship Week 2026 kicks off from 9th to 15th February, we at Timeout Homes are proud to join the nationwide celebration. This year’s theme, "Skills for Life," resonates deeply with our mission. It’s not just about learning a trade; it’s about equipping young people with the resilience, confidence, and practical abilities they need to navigate the world independently.
For many, an apprenticeship is a career stepping stone. For care leavers, it can be a lifeline. This week, we want to shine a light on why these opportunities are critical for the young people we support, and how we are actively working to change the narrative around employment for care leavers.

The Reality for Care Leavers in the Workforce
The transition from care to independence is often abrupt and challenging. While most young people have a safety net of family support well into their twenties, care leavers are frequently expected to stand on their own much sooner.
The statistics surrounding care leavers in the UK workforce paint a stark picture that we simply cannot ignore. Care leavers are over ten times more likely than their peers to be Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) by their 21st year. Nearly one-third of care leavers fall into this category, compared to just 2.4% of the general population.
Even when care leavers do secure employment, the ground beneath them often remains shaky. Over two-thirds of those working are in precarious roles—short-term contracts, part-time hours, or low-paid positions that offer little security or room for progression.
These aren't just numbers on a page; they represent the real struggles of talented, capable young people who simply need the right opportunity to thrive. At Timeout Homes, our Managing Director, Dominic, and the entire team are committed to turning these statistics around. We believe that stable employment is a key pillar of a successful transition out of care.
Why "Skills for Life" Matters
The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2026, "Skills for Life," perfectly encapsulates what we strive to provide. An apprenticeship is more than a qualification. It is a structured environment where young people can learn professional behaviours, understand workplace dynamics, and build self-esteem.
For a young person leaving care, an apprenticeship offers:
Financial Independence: Earning a wage while learning provides a crucial sense of autonomy.
Mentorship: Working alongside experienced colleagues provides positive role models and professional support networks.
Routine and Stability: A steady job provides structure to the week, which is vital for mental well-being.
Transferable Skills: Communication, time management, and problem-solving are skills that apply to every aspect of adult life.
Creating Opportunities Within Timeout Homes
We don't just advocate for apprenticeships; we live by them. We understand that the best way to support our young people is to offer them tangible experience in a supportive environment where they can make mistakes, learn, and grow without fear of immediate failure.
Recently, our young people aged 16 and over have been engaging in various job roles right here within the company. We have opened up opportunities in:
Housekeeping and Cleaning: Learning the high standards required to maintain professional environments.
Maintenance: Gaining hands-on technical skills by helping to maintain our care homes, ensuring they remain safe and welcoming for everyone.
These internal roles serve as a brilliant training ground. They allow our young people to dip their toes into the working world in a setting where they are already known and valued. The success we have seen so far has been incredibly encouraging, and we are determined to continue expanding these internal pathways.

Looking Ahead
National Apprenticeship Week is a time for celebration, but our commitment lasts all year round. We are dedicated to finding new ways to improve employment percentages for care leavers and ensuring that the "Skills for Life" they gain with us truly set them up for a bright future.
We have some truly inspiring stories unfolding within our homes. In fact, keep your eyes peeled for our next blog post, where we will be sharing the specific success story of one of our young people who is currently thriving in the working world. It’s a testament to what is possible with hard work and the right support.
Until then, we encourage all employers to look at how they can support care leavers in their own organisations. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to change a life forever.
